An Electronic Logging Device, or “ELD,” is a device intended to create a safer work environment for drivers of commercial vehicles. And ELD makes it easier and faster to accurately track, manage, and share data on driving and off-duty time.
Most motor carriers and drivers who are currently required to maintain records of duty status (RODS) must use an ELD, by federal law. The rule applies to commercial buses as well as trucks, and to Canada- and Mexico-domiciled drivers. There are some exemptions though. To find out if you are required to carry an ELD, click here.
An ELD is synchronized with the vehicle’s engine to automatically record a driver’s off-duty and on-duty time and securely transfer Hours of Service (HOS) data to a safety official. The types of data recorded include:
The driver/authorized user certifies that the data collected by the ELD is accurate. This is the driver’s Record of Duty Service (RODS). Once certified, the information is transferred to a safety official who checks to make sure there are no violations.
